How Many Portable Toilets Do I Need?

The short answer: for a 4-hour event without alcohol, plan on one portable toilet per 50 guests. Add 15–20% more units when alcohol is served or the event runs longer than 5 hours. Below is the full formula we use at Deluxe P-P Services to size every Chicago event we quote – plus adjustments for weddings, festivals, and jobsites.

The baseline formula

Start with one standard unit per 50 guests for a 4-hour event. That ratio is based on OSHA and PSAI (Portable Sanitation Association International) guidance and holds up in the real world across weddings, graduations, and community events.

0–50 guests: 1 unit
51–100 guests: 2 units
101–150 guests: 3 units
151–250 guests: 4–5 units
251–500 guests: 6–9 units

Adjust for alcohol and event length

Alcohol roughly doubles bathroom trips per guest. If beer, wine, or a bar is served, add about 15–20% more units. Events running longer than 5 hours need another 10% on top of that. A 150-guest, 6-hour wedding with an open bar lands at 4 units, not 3.

Weddings and formal events

For weddings we recommend at least one luxury restroom trailer or premium unit per 75 guests, plus one ADA-accessible unit for parties over 100. Guests in formalwear appreciate flushing toilets, sinks, and lighting – it directly affects how they remember the reception.

Construction and jobsites

OSHA requires one toilet per 20 workers on a 40-hour week. Add a handwashing station and schedule weekly servicing. Our construction crews across Chicagoland run on this ratio year-round.
