Portable Toilets for Festivals: Sizing, Servicing, and Layout

For festivals, plan by peak-hour attendance, not total gate. A 10,000-attendee event with 2,500 on-site at peak needs restrooms for 2,500, not 10,000.

Sizing

Use 1 unit per 75 attendees at peak for events under 4 hours, 1 per 50 for longer events, and 1 per 40 when alcohol is served. Add 5% ADA-accessible units per municipal code.

Servicing mid-event

For anything over 6 hours, schedule a mid-event pump-and-restock. Guests notice and reviews reflect it.

Layout

Cluster units in banks of 6–10 rather than scattering. Place clusters near food vendors and the main stage exits. Keep clear sightlines and no blind alleys.

Handwash stations

Include one 4-station handwash unit per 10 restrooms. Food-adjacent placement is required by most Chicago health departments.
